Sitting on the verandah at the Port Neill Caravan Park as the humidity of the day glassed out the bay, the soothing tones of the ocean view revealed the northern distant coasts that I have never really focused on before. Very peaceful and mellow Easter Monday, a great soothing end to a big weekend.

Painting Inspiration:
Anchored in the harbour at Dampier we have witnessed a couple of excellent lightning storms, this one particularly was great because we had no wind or rain while it carried on just on the other side of the causeway. Of course we took no chances and I went up to the bow & popped the anchor on its chain dipping into the water to act as an earth since the bolts were starting to strike particularly close and within a few minutes of doing it the squall hit & we hid inside for the next few hours. Nikki, our little boat buddy found a pokey little hole to hide in since she did not much appreciate the thunder. We had the best seat in the house!

Tuckamore beach is one of her sons favourite surfing spots & its wind swept arcing bay framed by the evolving river of sand dunes really captured me.

Camping out at Cowleys is one of my favourite things to do. We had a great stint there at one stage during summer with Dave, Carla, Crazy Dave & Salamanda, snorkelling & fishing all day. Stinkin hot bet we took the good old shade shelter down to the shoreline & sat under that all day with our toes in the ocean. Not to mention a full ice cold esky & bacon & eggs for breakfast. The only bummer is that fine sand that gets into EVERYWHERE, but it sure makes you feet nice & clean by the end of the stay.

So many times people have commented on my Rottnest Island paintings, saying how much they looked like this area. Its funny they should say that because the habitat is so similar, same kelp, same species of fish, same shells, same yummy whiting & reefy habitats. So for this reason I created the Port Neill Colour Spectrum which looks amazingly like some of the Rottnest Island Spectrums created in the past.

Always on the lookout for strange looking objects, I found this heavy round brass base behind Glenns shed. Thinking it was something to do with a car, he later told me how it had been sitting around for years and that it was the base of one of the old school ashtray stands. Funky & recyclable!

The First night we spent at the magical island of Doo, Steve had told me so much about as the paradise worth travelling 3000 miles for. The journey was hard and we shared it with people who were very unalike. This beautiful uninhabited island represented everything that I was hoping the journey to be. Isolated, beautiful, clean & uncluttered by the naive decadence of the average city slicker swallowed up by material means.

The last of the daylight slips off the western end of the island leaving a pale lemon backdrop which fades to a light apricot, leaving the sea to a lime and malachite, crushing gently on the wet coral sand of this luscious isolation.

Beyond the evening indoor sitting of tea and the same old television programmes, the night sky beckons with its pincushion of tiny lights. Warm, cool, windy or balmy, I relish the opportunity to take a walk, paddle around in the dinghy fishing or just lay flat on the deck to get drawn into the illuminated cosmos. Addictive thing that it is, as the longer you look the deeper and deeper you go.
Interesting that we assume things are just not there when we do not see them even though during the day the scene is still there, just not nearly accessible.

Hamelin pool is a lovely spot with its imitation icy green waters that obscure the curios stromatelites, relics of our biological ancestry. The colour scheme of this tidal flat has a wonderful cooling feel and I wonder if this has anything to do with the hyper saline waters polarising effect. Pretty special stuff!

On a mirror breathless evening on the water for a brief moment, in a specific sunset you can experience this immense brilliant fading light. Its so exhilarating to be immersed in this light. I just love still twilights like this.

The Nullarbor Plain is a unique experience not just for its reputation as the longest straightest roads in Australia (and the most expensive roadhouses) but for its diverse scenes and secret spots. Any adventure hearted outdoor person would find it more than mildly interesting with a little bit of nonce to tack off the beaten track.
It became a favourite novelty for us to come to attention at the "P" stops, especially when the sun waned low on the horizon, We would rate their eligibility as a decent bush camp for us and our big red bus. As we crossed the great Australian Bight we got to the stage where we stopped at nearly every single one to gaze mystified off the edge of the 200m cliffs at the pounding slow motion swell tousling amongst the rocks.
On this occasion we had camped at the Cocklebiddy Cave 10kms before Cocklebiddy (love these names). An hour before the sun was due to set we descended into the moisture laden blackness. At the bottom of the cave was a brisk tempered still pond through which you could see people had waked across to get to the next chamber. We braved the chill and had a quick wash (a little less chilly than our second freezing cold Nullarbor night with a stiff northerly, fresh off the night dessert. Brrrrr!!! Bloody freezing!) When we emerged from the steep subterranean pool, the sun was just crossing the horizon so by the time we managed to scurry back to the van and get out paints the sun had slipped away leaving refracted tones of gold, gilded pinks and watermelon.

I have had a few early starts lately, which has been a nice change experiencing the new daytime shift. It has a very profound effect this morning, light lavender and powder blue. The are all very high vibratory colours even the cliffs which reflect the first burst of sunlight just seconds from now.
On my walk to the gallery in the morning now, I experience a softer lighter feeling of inspiration and peace, something that feels healing.
They remind me very much of the Atlantean colours and awaken a stirring subconsciousness in my day in connection to the waning moon setting over the west.

On a trip to Perth with "Thorny Devils" we stopped just south of Denham at the beautifully spectacular Eagle Bluff where you can see from 100m above the water all the wildlife perusing the seagrass beds from rays, turtles, dolphins & mostly sharks.
But what got me was the deep magenta/green seagrass beds weaving their strange perimeters along the silted "Shark Bay Green" sandy benthos in a transition from the deep darkness to the immensely lighter vibrance reflected back with the 11am sunrays. Peaceful and refreshingly intense like a big apple adventuring stone.

Painting Inspiration:
An anticipated sunset glow after a full day out on the Leeuwin. I had climbed the mast for the first time earlier that day and the motion of the smooth swells was well implanted in my memory. As we pulled into Fremantle, the moist air hummed with the intensifying glow of the fading sun. It felt as if the sunset were three dimensional soaking in, through and all around us instead of just being on the horizon. Just fabulous.

Raina and Viv came up to Ningaloo late in 1998 and we drove round to meet them at their camp one morning which ended up being afternoon by the time wed got there. Viv had a Hilux and they took us around the back way through the dunes to Norwegian Bay an old whaling station. This bay is where the Continental shelf comes the closest to the shore around Australia. White whale-boned litter the sandy track while huge vats tower to the right of us which held the millions of gallons of whale oil extracted from this coast. We had our lunch in an oil boiler where a bungarra was buried, out of the wind. We jumped in for a quick snorkel to resurface and find five fishermen pulling in good 80cm Spangled Emperor one after the other. They stayed about 30 minutes and finally left with a shitload of fish. I later found out that Norwegian Bay is a sanctuary zone.
We headed back to Raina and Vivs camp and had some lovely rice curry and a glass of champaz as always, while watching the sun slide behind the horizon for yet another evening miracle.
Painted at my jungle campsite in Broome. The frame took a good two hours to construct in the company of Tim and the painting about 18hrs.
I think one of the most bizarre things about Exmouth would have to be those VLF towers, installed by the American Navy, to communicate with submarines and the like throughout the southern hemisphere. It is said that at tower zero, the central tower of many which support the antennae wires, every object is made of wood. If it was made of metal it would burn up straight away. You can hold a single fluorescent tube in your hand and it will light up and my mates Engel refrigerator started up in the back of his landy one time, without being plugged in!
The other bizarre thing is how most of the locals never go around to Ningaloo Reef! This is the longest fringing coral reef in the world. There are only two dive companies which take you diving on the actual Ningaloo Reef!
Turquoise Bay is one of my most highly rated snorkelling spots. I have been there quite often and experienced many of the fish we have identified on the North West Cape. It is an extremely diverse ecology.
The graceful Leopard Shark, Stegostoma fasciatum, is a placid shark looking very similar, with its body ridging, to the Whale Shark also found at Ningaloo.. These sharks only grow to 3.5metres! They have an extremely elongated top tail lobe like other nurse sharks and only feed on molluscs so there is no reason to fear them. Juvenile leopard sharks are black and white, vertically banded so they are also known as zebra sharks.
Note the remora on the sharks underside taking advantage of the free ride and food.
The Spangled Emperors, Lenthrinus nebulosus or Nebs as the marine scientists on the Sailaway Ningaloo trip called them, are grandiose creatures. Their faces shimmer gold and tin-silver-blue and their huge chunks of bodies stretch two thirds the length of me. They pout with delicate lips which nuzzle the sand.

We spent our first night of our Montys trip at the south western side of North Regnard Island behind the sand spits protection from the westerlies which were in no way helpful for making our west south west progress. We had left on new years eve & instead of making it to a luxurious location we were in a make do anchorage hiding from 35 knot winds. So it was Steve, the dog, both of who does not drink, a bottle of champagne, the stars & a Radio National Blues special to make the 2005 new year.
Even though it was not the picturesque moonlit lagoonal new years I had hoped for, it was most satisfying. Just as well my expectations are prone to flexibility.

At the north end of Trimouille Island where the nuclear air blast testing was conducted 30 years ago, is this fantastic sand spit riddled with turtle nests. We anchored for the night just off the beach here, & before the sunset we went ashore to explore the island. The sunset was fantastic & we fished in the twilight. It seemed a beautiful peaceful spot with the northerly wind blowing us back off the beach until we wake up in the middle of the night hearing the sound of lapping waves & wondering why they sounded so close, only to find when we popped out heads up that we were sideways on the beach! As the tide had gone out, the wind had changed & had started to blow us onshore onto the beach. We had anchored too close.
Luckily we did check that the substrate between us and the beach at the time was sand. So we started the engines & pulled ourselves up to face into the wind and Steve rowed out & placed a second anchor out that we could pull ourselves onto as the tide rose. 2 hours later we finally cuddled back into bed..... I really hate getting up from my warm bed for emergencies.

This was our first anchorage on arriving at the Montys after a few days pottering down the coast from Dampier. The clarity of the water here was fantastic & you could see the sandy silty bottom as the tide ebbed. As Steve explored further up the passage in the inflatable with Nikki, I stayed on board & did some fishing. It did not take long until the reel went off in a slow drag & after a 15 minute play, a gorgeous shovel nosed ray with tiny blue flecks on his modified snout came to the surface.
The pliers just being out or reach of course made the task of removing the hook fouled on the outer edge of his underside cheek difficult, I had to sit on the poor creature, but he thrashed away anyway. I eventually managed to get him back in the water unharmed & he cruised away unfazed... as those shovelnoses do.
They are peaceful creatures of refined indifference.

One of our favourite spots to anchor for the weekend is the second bay north of this unnamed bay. These bays ledging on deep water make for an excellent abundance of wildlife & sea creatures. Although this bay is unsuitable for us to anchor, it sure makes a nice swimming & snorkelling beach when you get it to your self the majority of the time.
One time we anchored in the dinghy near the rocks on the northern end of the bay to do a spot of fishing, Steve popping his head over the side for a look below with out getting his toes wet. Being a surfer he was a little edgy about sharks.... Finally he jumped over to scope out the habitat for fish only to launch immediately back in the boat with eyes wide and snorkel intact in mouth exclaiming there was an enormous shark just sitting there.

Turquoise Bay is my favourite spot to experience Ningaloo Reef. Even though you only need to snorkel it is my favourite dive and no matter how many times I go there I never have the same experience.
On the overcast days it is a beautiful experience with the bright coloured fish & corals all glowing in contrast. Restricted to the cover of darkness normally, giant grey bumpy stingrays & shy hump headed wrasses cruises around uninhibited by me.
It’s a great place to hide out of the wind & like being in another world, being carried along by the current on a grand aqua escalator.
Sometimes I just wish I could stay here.

About a year ago when we first got little Nikki our Jack Russell as a pup, we took the white dinghy over to the nearest island in the harbour & anchored up for an explore. The seagulls soon let us know it was a home for their breeding & we walked to the west end over the whole shell sand to beachcomb & explore. Among the scerics of Spinifex was this old piece of boat wood, a hatch of some sort which made my mind & artistic eyes immediately light up with a vision of the painting it would become.
It has taken me until now to get around to completing the process.....

Coming in from the south east side of the Montebello Islands from Cape Preston after waiting for the wind to change to westerly, I climbed the mast for the first of many times, to navigate through the intensive fringing reef systems among the sheltered lagoonal waters. The wildlife started appearing immediately the second we passed between the straggling rocky outcrops into the main lagoon. Massive stingrays, turtles, sharks it was all happening. What a marine lovers Mecca!

The winds were a nice easterly allowing us to make our way north up the chain of Dampier Archipelago Islands to Dolphin Island, the eastern island that created flying foam passage. We like to anchor in adjacent to the 2nd bay north from Searipple Passage where there is a fabulous south facing beach, home to hundreds of blue spotted lagoon rays, turtles and snapper. The fringing reef in this bay lends a variety of fish species on the bommies off the point & just around the point is a great spot for some large oysters on a low tide.
After collecting some 2 dozen oysters from the thousands there I made my way back to Whiplash where we had invited "Lucky Pete" over for dinner. Before he came over we climbed the mast & took photos of Petes boat in the fading yellow afternoon light.
As we sat admiring the twilight & licking our lips from the array of garlic butter & soy garlic wasabi oysters I had prepared, we noticed Petes boat, with her mizzen up, slowly sail off her anchor and out into the narrow channel like a ghost ship.
We all blinked widely before realizing that Shanaly was making her way rapidly toward our bow, swept beam on in the 5 knot incoming current. Steve & I raced to the bow where Steve fended our stainless railing from a nose job with brute force, pushing Shanaly off into the mainstream north running current with a groan.
Pete made his way into his dinghy and scooted over to Shanny who was off & ready for a twilight sail.... and let the anchor go, where they stayed peacefully for the rest of the night. The next morning the weather had soured & we spent the morning sitting through this fantastic squall which came & went rather rapidly although the day stayed grey. The next front approached so we made a move to catch the winds back trailing a large handline behind which proved bountiful with a nice Spanish mackerel for dinner.

A blue moon from the dinghy on the way in to the first Tuesday night barbie at Jurat park in Dampier which has now become our social /"Barbeque Night/" for us boaties longing some bush scenery and a real fire with John. Discussing why the moon looked so blue. It turns out the old /"Blue Moon/" is just when you get two full moon in one month which happens once in a blue moon! Just lucky it was a blue, Blue Moon, even if it was a couple of days old.

Sitting out the front of the Bali Garden Hotel, an old relic & fabulously amenable accommodation, right on the beach, on a wooden beach lounge, painting amongst locals creating their vast range of handcrafted wares watching the great green beach breaks close out of the flat sand. This is the closest I will get to a "Real Holiday". The other half I spent traipsing around the country side on a motorbike. Its such a great way to improve the old bahasa Indonesia. The Putih Perempuan Pelukis, as I was known, meaning white lady painter.

My first painting for 2009!
We headed down to Lincoln to bring the Bella back to Arno after Christmas. As we headed out of Port Lincoln we stopped in at Spillsby Island to drop off two big water tanks to the shack on the north side of the island.
Its was such a gorgeous spot with the reddish weedbeds showing off the inner sandy lagoons.
Just made me want to go in and loll around in those crystal aqua pools.

Created while overseas sailing the eastern Indonesian Archipelago.
You just cant beat those tranquil moonrises.
The driftwood its mounted on I picked up on Doo Palau and has me stumped as to what it actually is. It appears to be some sort of tool, but shows no sign of waer on the bottom edge. I think we pretty much decided it was an ornamental piece of wood from a fence or boat, but who knows!
